What goes in a pentest report

If engineering cannot reproduce the finding, the work failed. If leadership cannot order the fix, it failed halfway. The report is the product.

The finding

A title that describes the problem, not the tool identifier. Preconditions. Steps someone on the team can run without calling the vendor.

Impact on data, an account or a process — not only a score. If one finding depends on another, that is written down.

What does not become a cover finding

An alert that did not hold. An old version with no path. A generic hardening item pasted onto every client.

When it avoids rework, the report can record what was tried and did not open.

After delivery

Fix questions are part of the work. A retest on what was closed, when asked. A pentest that disappears on PDF day leaves the team alone.

Ask for a sample report on the call. Two pages are enough to see whether there is reproduction or only a cover.
